UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Starting February 15th, Research informatics and publishing department and Donald W. Hammer Center for Maps and Geospatial Information in Pennsylvania State University Library We will be holding three workshops on maps, GIS, GPS, and data visualization.
This workshop series introduces Penn State users to the application of geospatial information in research and educational projects. Learn how geospatial information can enhance communication about your topic by discovering geospatial data, creating geospatial applications, and online and mobile applications for collecting geospatial information using ArcGIS Field Maps. can be touched. The Global Positioning System (GPS) Unit Overview, available from the Donald W. Hamer Center for Maps and Geospatial Information, provides users with information about geospatial data collection.
The workshop is free and open to Penn State undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, staff, and faculty. No prior knowledge of maps or GIS is required.
Participants can participate online or in person as indicated. Those planning to attend online must register using the link provided. If you wish to participate in person, you will be required to register if necessary.
Workshop schedule
Telling stories through geospatial data — February 15, 4-5 p.m., online or at the W13 Patty Library
Use maps and geospatial resources to tell stories through geospatial data. Because geospatial data can be relevant to a wide range of topics, this session will touch on relevant characteristics of geospatial data resources and identify ways to connect geospatial interests and approaches. This session will focus on commonly used applications such as ArcGIS Online and other open geospatial resources. This session aims to encourage participants to think critically about their project’s geospatial data and reflect on bias in a personal and responsible way. This workshop is part of Love Data Week. He is a GIS specialist and will be presented by Tara Anthony. Click here to register for Tell Your Story Through Geospatial Data.
Overview of ArcGIS field maps — April 4, 3-4 p.m., online or at W13 Pattee Library
ArcGIS Field Maps, available to Penn State users through an Esri Education license, is a mobile app that can be used with ArcGIS Online content to collect location, descriptive, and GPS information, and include imagery. This session covers creating layers in his ArcGIS Online for use with ArcGIS Field Maps. It will also be useful for participants interested in learning about geographic information collection and related his ArcGIS Online applications that can be used for educational and research purposes. Content created with ArcGIS Field Maps can be incorporated into ArcGIS Online applications for additional communication, visualization, and analysis purposes. He is a GIS specialist and will be presented by Tara Anthony. Click here to register for “Introduction to ArcGIS Field Maps.”
Global Positioning System (GPS) Overview Overview — April 4th, 4-5pm, W13 Patty Library
This session will provide participants with an overview of GPS units available for loan through the Donald W. Hammer Center for Maps and Geospatial Information at the Pennsylvania State University Libraries. Participants will be able to utilize her GPS unit to review, explore and learn about its uses and capabilities. The user will see borrowed information for his GPS units and related accessories such as Garmin GPSMap 64st, Garmin Oregon, Trimble GeoXH 6000, and Bad Elf Flex units. Demonstrations using GPS units will be held outdoors, weather permitting. His GIS specialist Tara Anthony will be presenting.
