A spokesperson for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed this week that the agency has stopped using private phone data purchased from data vendors. Authorities used this method of identifying individual mobile phone users and their locations until September 2023. Officials discontinued this practice after the Department of Homeland Security released a report documenting this lack of compliance with department policy.
“Like other law enforcement agencies, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) uses a variety of methods to investigate violations of the law, with appropriate respect for civil liberties and privacy interests,” an ICE spokesperson said. We’re embracing technology.”
Amid growing concerns about cybersecurity, Congress recently held a bipartisan discussion about the lack of policy that prevents federal law enforcement from accessing citizens’ personal data without a warrant.
