Binance, the world’s leading exchange by trading volume, currently confronting Potential data breach issues.
Dark web forums are offering what they claim to be verified user data from the Binance platform.
The post advertises the sale of data including Binance users’ names, countries, and phone numbers. If genuine, this could raise serious privacy concerns.
According to a forum post, the data primarily includes English-speaking users from Tier 1 countries.
The seller suggests that you can verify the authenticity of your data by trying to log in using your binance.com phone number or by contacting the user directly.
Although the claims on dark web forums are alarming, the authenticity of the information remains unconfirmed.
2019 incident
There is no clear evidence to confirm that the data comes from Binance’s systems or that it is accurate.
In a similar incident in 2019, Binance investigated an alleged leak of customer credentials. At the time, the exchange refuted the claims, pointing to inconsistencies with internal data and the lack of digital watermarks on its systems.
In the 2019 incident, Binance reportedly threatened to distribute 10,000 photos similar to Binance’s KYC data to the public unless a ransom of 300 BTC was paid, but Binance refused.
Given these past events, the current situation raises questions about the legitimacy of the data being sold.
The dark web is notorious for such illegal offerings, and determining the source and authenticity of such data remains a challenge for both affected institutions and their users.
Binance has previously expressed its determination to investigate and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to address such issues.
