You’ve probably heard of “parent” parking lots, “stroller parking lots” and “parking lots for parents pushing strollers”, but have you ever heard of “ladies’ parking lots”?
TikTok comedian Chocky Dan has criticised a “sexist” multi-storey car park on Perth’s Pier Street which has larger parking spaces reserved for women.
In the video, he is seen wandering through a female-friendly zone, calling it “disgusting” and demanding that the City of Perth be “held accountable” for his actions.
“This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen,” he says, pointing to a bright pink ladies’ parking sign. “There’s a blue parking spot over there, and that’s the standard parking spot.”
He then used his body to measure the width of various parking spaces and declared that the women’s spaces were at least “20% wider.”
“Sexist city, no,” he finished, then picked himself up from the ground and walked away.
Is this parking space sexist?
Comments on the video were divided: some said it would make them feel more comfortable returning to their underground car park at night, while others said it made them feel more vulnerable.
“It’s not about the width of the space, it’s about the safety of the underground car park,” one person said. “So that people can’t hide that it’s a car. More open space means more visibility.”
“This is definitely a matter of personal safety,” another woman said.
“It’s for strollers and closer to the entrance so it’s a bit safer for mums and babies,” a third user wrote.
“I have a wife and two daughters and I get it!!! That’s the most logical thing I’ve ever seen,” one father said.
“It’s to keep women safe.”
However, others pointed out that “perverts would know exactly where the woman parks.”
“Yeah, they’re more dangerous because they know exactly where their target is,” a second agreed.
And others agreed with the comedian, calling the act sexist.
“I totally agree with you that ‘this is sexist and has no place in Perth in this day and age,'” someone commented.
“This is embarrassing,” exclaimed another user.
According to Daily MailParking spaces are also well lit and equipped with emergency help buttons near the exits.
“The council said the measure was taken to keep customers safe from anti-social behaviour,” the publisher revealed.
