West Village 5G Tower Fight Significant Advances and Important New Hurdles
First of all, good news. We have received additional written notice that construction of the 32-foot-tall metal 5G towers planned for 771 Greenwich Street, 445 West Street, 807 Greenwich Street, and 100 Gansevoort Street “will no longer be pursued.” Ta. By the company that is going to set up there. This is an important victory in our efforts to ensure that these ungainly and often unnecessary towers are not placed in locations that negatively impact neighboring historic resources.
Bad news. Plans for two towers proposed near our neighborhood, 100 Horatio Street and 100 Jane Street, have not only been opposed by us and other local groups, but also despite decisions by the New York State Historic Preservation Office. It continues to be promoted. As part of the historic preservation review we were consulting on, we argued that such a tower would have an “adverse impact” on nearby historic resources. In response to our and others’ objections, the planned large video screen was removed from the proposed structure, but the 32-foot-tall metal tower remains as part of the proposal for this site. It has been.
Despite this determination, the companies behind these plans continue to use flimsy arguments that street foliage blocks the view of structures and reduces impact. We oppose their latest application for these sites and are calling on state agencies and others to continue to oppose them steadfastly. Read our letters here and here.
