Southwest Airlines recently paid a fitting tribute to World War II veteran Helen Marie Horvath on her 102nd birthday. In a heartwarming post on Instagram, the airline mentioned how they planned a special birthday surprise for the veteran at his son’s request. When Mrs. Horvath arrived in St. Louis, she was welcomed with American flags, crowns, bubbles, Happy Birthday signs, and cheers. Overjoyed by her surprise celebration, the woman shared stories of her life so far with her staff. She said she began her military journey at the age of 21, after which she received an “honorable discharge” in recognition of her valuable service.
In addition to detailed posts about her life, the airline also shared several photos from the surprise celebration. In the first photo, a veteran wearing a crown sits in a wheelchair, surrounded by well-wishers carrying balloons and party decorations. Two staff members can also be seen holding up the number 102 in honor of her birthday. A nostalgic photo from her younger days was also shared in her third slide.
The caption read, “Thank you Helen Marie for your service and the St. Louis Police Department for making it such a memorable birthday celebration.”

She spent most of her time in the Army working as a nursing assistant at a local hospital, but There was also time spent searching offshore submarines. She was promoted to the rank of sergeant.
