ESA is helping unlock the next generation of space connectivity and support anywhere, everywhere communications through advances in a new software platform from innovative young company Aalyria.
Satellites, high-altitude platforms, and drones operating above the Earth’s surface play a critical role in supporting wireless connectivity systems. ESA has signed a development agreement with advanced networking and laser communications company Aalyria to harness the power of these assets to build a software platform to support his 5G/6G connectivity.
This project aims to build 5G/6G compatibility into Aalyria’s Spacetime system. A software platform that can integrate various systems to form networks that cover space, air, sea, and land. Unlike fixed-location assets on Earth, assets operating in the atmosphere and space are constantly in motion with respect to Earth, each other, and potential users. Integrating these has traditionally been difficult because they have relied on custom-built systems that were not designed with interoperability in mind.
Antonio Franchi, ESA’s 5G and 6G Space Strategy Program Director, said: “Thanks to integration, cooperation with industrial partners, such as this one with Aalyria, will play a vital role in ESA’s efforts to drive the digital transformation of industry and society.” 5G/6G Terrestrial Integration of networks and non-terrestrial networks. Establishing seamless, ubiquitous, and resilient connectivity is critical in the emerging technology landscape. The platform envisioned under this development agreement has the potential to be a transformative asset for telecommunications systems, with significant benefits for stakeholders. ”
Chris Taylor, CEO of Aalyria, said: “This achievement marks a significant milestone in Aalyria’s journey to reshape the future of space communications. Our collaboration with ESA will push the boundaries of what is possible with 5G space connectivity. It’s a testament to our dedication to pushing the envelope.”
