Unpredictable weather and temperature fluctuations have long plagued winter sports communities across the country. This year is another example of a delayed winter. Fortunately, innovations in snow technology and monitoring are making up for the lack of natural snow, but no technology has been more innovative than the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) into the systems we experience today. there is no.
Nevada’s relatively short winter season previously placed strict limits on the length of the ski season. Our state-of-the-art snowmaking machines are working to change that. By leveraging AI, machines can track local weather conditions and adjust their output based on the atmosphere in which they work. Monitoring the water used for weather and snowfall makes our operations more economically and environmentally sustainable. The snow blowers we deploy are developed using best-in-class technology and can operate at temperatures as low as -30°C. Additionally, our snowcats are equipped with breakthrough technology that measures snow depth and distributes snow most efficiently across the slopes.
These innovations work together to enable Sky Tavern to sustain our operations and keep our doors open longer throughout the year. And ultimately, it will help our team continue Sky Tavern’s tradition of providing affordable skiing to our community.
Making snow is still new to Sky Tavern. Just last year, thanks to some generous individuals and foundations in our area, he was able to raise $2.5 million for the purchase of the equipment. Although snowmaking is new, our tradition is long. Sky Tavern has trained more than 125,000 kids since its junior ski program began in 1948, and that number grows every season. Sky Tavern’s season passes are affordable, giving your family access to skiing and snowboarding and creating lasting memories. Additionally, we expanded the mountain bike trails around Sky Tavern, fulfilling our commitment to providing our community with affordable outdoor recreation year-round.
My work with the talented team at Sky Tavern is personal to me. That’s because his grandfather Rocco Spina spearheaded the land acquisition and installation of the new Poma He lift on behalf of the City of Reno in the early 1960s. I fell in love with skiing at Skye and went on to a career in professional skiing. Now, I hope that our work at Sky Tavern can provide the next generation with the opportunity to use our slopes for self-exploration, just as I did when I was younger. That’s one of the reasons we sponsor about 400 kids each year who can’t afford a Sky Tavern pass. As our founder Marce Herz said, every child should have the opportunity to ski.
Our team is excited to leverage AI to support and enhance Sky Tavern’s operations. However, we also recognize that there are mixed feelings regarding the introduction of artificial intelligence into everyday life. In a democracy, debate is always healthy and welcomed. However, we hope that decisions about the future of AI will be made in light of the positive impact the technology will have on companies like ours. We need all the help we can get. Don’t limit yourself based on distrust of exciting new technology.
In the coming years, Sky Tavern will rely on AI and emerging technology to keep its doors open. We urge legislators to pay close attention to this issue as it relates to excessive regulatory measures against emerging technologies.
Yale Spina is Chairman of the Sky Tavern Board of Directors. Sky Tavern is a 501(c)3 non-profit sports education and training organization.
