TL;DR
- Apple accounted for seven of the top 10 smartphones shipped in 2023, according to the tracking firm.
- The iPhone 14 Pro Max was the most popular model this year.
- Samsung Galaxy A14 4G became the most shipped Android smartphone in 2023.
Apple will overtake Samsung as the top smartphone maker in 2023, taking the number one spot for the first time in about 10 years. So what were the most popular mobile phones of that year?
Fortunately, the tracking company canaris answered this question in X and posted a diagram detailing the top 10 most popular smartphones by shipments in 2023. Check out the infographic below.
Apple’s iPhone took seven of the top 10 spots. However, this still seems to be an improvement compared to 2022, when Counterpoint Research reported that eight of the top 10 most popular smartphones were iPhones.
Canalys reports that this is the first time an iPhone Pro model has topped the chart. But we’re eyeing the 2022 iPhone 14 Pro Max for the number one spot, rather than the recent iPhone 15 Pro Max. It is safe to assume that this is because the iPhone 15 Pro Max was only on sale for about 3 months, whereas the previous model was on the market all year round.
The most popular Android smartphone was Samsung’s Galaxy A14 4G, which came in 6th place. This puts it ahead of the iPhone 15 Pro (7th place) and the standard iPhone 15 (10th place). It’s interesting to note that this device doesn’t even have 5G connectivity, ostensibly speaking to consumers who value lower price points over features.
On the other hand, Galaxy A54 5G and Galaxy A14 5G were ranked 8th and 9th respectively. His A54’s performance in particular remains encouraging given its mid-tier positioning at $449 compared to his sub-$200 budget bracket for the A14 series.
Nevertheless, these results are also notable in that there are no other Android brands on the list. This is especially noteworthy since for Xiaomi, Redmi smartphones were a regular on these lists until 2021.
