TELUS powers 5G networks with Samsung’s vRAN 3.0 and Open RAN solutions to improve performance, energy efficiency and flexibility for future expansion
TELUS and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced they will build Canada’s first commercially virtualized open radio access network (RAN). RAN is an intelligent, next-generation technology that provides enhanced performance, flexibility, energy efficiency, and automation. The two companies are expanding their collaboration from greenfield (new build) to brownfield (existing infrastructure) deployments.
TELUS selects Samsung as its 5G network vendor; June 2020, this innovative approach to infrastructure deployment embodies the essence of collaboration, bringing together manufacturers and providers to build modular, state-of-the-art wireless networks. This is also his one of the first truly virtualized Open RAN deployments within a complex brownfield network environment.
Open RAN allows TELUS to use components from different manufacturers that best suit its needs, and Virtualized Radio Access Network (vRAN) allows it to use software instead of hardware. This allows TELUS to more quickly access the latest technology as it becomes available, improving the customer experience and fostering network innovation, while also increasing opportunities for equipment vendors.
“This is a very exciting milestone for TELUS and the industry as a whole, as it gives us the most flexible way to deliver a diverse range of services to Canadians and enables a new level of mobile experience.” says. Nazim Benhadid, Senior Vice President, TELUS Networks. “We are proud to be the first Canadian carrier to integrate this cutting-edge technology, along with Samsung and other partners.”
“Innovation is not an outcome, but a continuous process that changes our daily lives,” he said. Junehee Lee, Executive Vice President, Head of Global Sales & Marketing, Network Business, Samsung Electronics. “TELUS and Samsung have been at the forefront of meaningful transformation in mobile communications, and we look forward to continuing to unlock the benefits of software-centric innovation by advancing our industry-leading vRAN and Open RAN. I am.”
The companies have extensively tested both vRAN and Open RAN deployments in select Canadian markets with excellent results, demonstrating the telecom-grade performance and reliability of multi-vendor Open RAN technology leveraging Samsung’s vRAN solution. has been verified. Commercial deployment will begin in the first half of this year, with large-scale network deployment expected to begin in mid-2024.
To expand this collaboration, Samsung will provide its versatile vRAN software and proven Open RAN compliant solutions, including support for the 64T64R Massive MIMO radio and third-party radio integration.Samsung’s solutions include the latest vRAN 3.0 For 4G and 5G. Featuring enhanced features for improved energy savings, performance optimization, and intelligent automation with Samsung’s Service Management and Orchestration (SMO). Samsung’s AI-based SMO will help TELUS accelerate vRAN deployments at scale by enabling automatic deployment of thousands of network sites simultaneously. TELUS also provides a comprehensive feature set for end-to-end automation of multiparty solutions, making it easy to deploy, operate, and optimize networks.
TELUS’ bold approach to multi-vendor Open RAN brownfield deployments also leverages collaboration from other ecosystems. Cloud infrastructure will be provided by Wind River, leveraging the company’s experience in real-time operating systems and cloud-native distributed edge platforms. In addition, Hewlett Packard Enterprise offers the HPE ProLiant DL110 Gen11 server with four features.th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processor with Intel vRAN Boost. Open and flexible, workloads are optimized for Open RAN and provide the foundation for distributed units (DUs).
“vRAN and Open RAN continue to be at the forefront of network transformation, and Samsung continues to demonstrate leadership in proving the ability of virtualized Open RAN to deliver high performance and efficiency in commercial 5G networks. ” he said. Stefan Pongratz, Vice President and Analyst, Dell’Oro Group. “Bringing vRAN and Open RAN to the Canadian market with TELUS represents another formidable step in reimagining RAN for long-term benefits.”
