On February 3, Chinese telecommunications giant China Mobile launched the world’s first set of 5G and 6G integrated ground orbit network low-orbit experimental satellites.
China Mobile 01 Star has been revealed to be the world’s first experimental satellite that can test 5G ground and orbit integration technology. The onboard base station can take advantage of the satellite’s wide coverage and transmit its 5G signal to places that terrestrial networks cannot cover. Another satellite, “Star Core Verification Star,” carries the first star-borne core network system designed with the 6G concept.
This dual-star experimental system will be used to test integrated ground-orbit communication technology that combines low-orbit satellites and ground-based mobile communication networks. The orbital altitude of these two experimental satellites is approximately 500 kilometers. Compared to geostationary satellites at an altitude of 36,000 kilometers, they have the advantage of lower latency and higher data transmission rates. The development of large-scale low-orbit satellite network communications will help compensate for the lack of coverage of terrestrial mobile networks and provide higher-bandwidth satellite Internet services in remote areas.
