Ayo Edebiri and cast sing about the strangest movie tie-in product ever
“SNL” featured the Internet’s favorite popcorn bucket.
It’s long saturday night live A tradition of twisting on bizarre movie tie-in merchandise. Thirty years ago, it included a sketch like this Philadelphia Action Figures, the punchline is that it’s totally weird to see action figures appear in a high-end drama like this: Philadelphia. This week, a uniquely shaped tie-up product appeared at the show. Dune: Part 2. However, in this case, the punchline was that the product at the center of the sketch was completely real.
That product?a dunes-Themed popcorn bucket with sandworm-shaped attachment. Kotaku’s headline accurately calls it “the stuff of nightmares,” and several of the film’s cast are also baffled by its design.
The sketch depicts an affair between two high school students, played by Ayo Edebiri and Marcello Hernandez, whose affair takes a bizarre turn. It’s also mostly told through songs, which makes you wonder, “What the hell am I looking at?” All of it.If I thought so SNL‘s musical numbers aren’t as weird as ‘Nude in New York,’ but this sketch might prove you wrong.
Perhaps the sketch’s best moment comes when the lyrics go meta. “Children around the world will buy this/that.” dunes Popcorn Bucket,” the cast sings. “We didn’t make this up/This is real.” Sometimes you just have to accept it when reality becomes more absurd than absurd comedy. This sketch accomplishes that. It has a catchy hook.
