Responsible AI innovation requires three pillars: forward-looking innovation, clear governance, and, of course, technology that actually works.
That’s where engineering comes into play. Sarah Bird leads Microsoft’s Responsible AI Engineering efforts, working to accelerate the adoption and positive impact of AI by integrating the latest innovations in research, products, and policy. She has helped create and apply responsible AI principles, standards, and tools across the company, led a group of experts across the company, and built key Microsoft products such as Microsoft Copilot and her Github Copilot. Ta.
Bird has been committed to the field of responsible AI since its founding. She was one of the founding researchers in Microsoft’s first Responsible AI group, was an active member of the Microsoft AETHER committee, and contributed to the creation of the Microsoft Responsible AI Standard.
She received her Ph.D. She received her PhD in Computer Science at Berkeley and her supervisor was Turing Award winner Dave Patterson. Before she joined Microsoft, Sarah was also a founding member of her AI Ethics group at Facebook.
She is also Microsoft’s New York location leader for engineering and research and is passionate about New York as a place for technology development and innovation. Bird’s team is lighting the way in terms of what is possible with responsible AI, providing real-world examples of AI that operates safely and responsibly and moving the field forward.
Bird first encountered engineering when two female engineers came to speak to her fourth-grade class. Seeing how that one small experience of hers changed the trajectory of her life, Bird became passionate about mentorship and encouraging more women to enter the field of responsible AI. became.
Bird’s passion for responsible AI is driven by our belief in the potential of AI and the recognition that we cannot realize its full potential unless we have safe, responsible, fair, and robust AI. being moved. This is the driving force behind her work.
