Samsung Electronics, nine other global tech giants, and Northeastern University in Boston formed the AI-RAN Alliance on Monday at MWC 2024 in Barcelona, Spain.
Samsung Electronics announced on Monday that it has entered into a partnership with a global big tech company to research sixth-generation technology and build an ecosystem based on the convergence of artificial intelligence and wireless communication technology.
The AI-RAN Alliance was officially launched earlier in the day at Mobile World Congress 2024, the world’s largest mobile technology show in Barcelona, Spain, with 10 telecommunications and software companies and one university as founding members. participated.
In addition to Samsung, members of the newly launched alliance include Nvidia, Arm, SoftBank, Ericsson, Nokia, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, T-Mobile USA, DeepSig, and Northeastern University in Boston.
The AI-RAN Alliance is divided into three working groups: AI for radio access networks, AI and RAN, and AI on RAN, and conducts subdivided technical research. Samsung said the company will participate in all three working groups.
The AI for RAN working group researches wireless communication optimization techniques using AI and machine learning to improve frequency, cost, and energy efficiency, and the AI and RAN group explores wireless communication optimization techniques that use AI and machine learning to improve frequency, cost, and energy efficiency. Research AI and RAN for technology. The AI on RAN group drives technology research with a focus on discovering new AI applications and services in wireless networks.
The technical reports and white papers obtained from the Alliance’s research activities are expected to greatly contribute to the standardization and commercialization of 6G, including the discovery of new services, technical requirements, and specifications in the future.
As a member company, Samsung plans to lead 6G research, expand the ecosystem by applying AI to wireless communication technology, lead service innovation, and enhance communication network efficiency.
“The AI-RAN Alliance will foster collaboration, drive innovation, and usher in a new era of transformation around AI and 6G networks. We believe this will create new value for carriers,” said Charlie Zhang, Senior Vice President, Samsung Research America.
Meanwhile, Samsung established the Advanced Communication Research Center in May 2019 under a research organization that will lead the development of next-generation communication technology, and ACRC published a 6G white paper in July 2020 and a 6G frequency white paper in May 2022. Announced.
The technology giant has played a leading role in research and development and revitalizing the ecosystem to strengthen its competitiveness in the next-generation communications market, including hosting the first Samsung 6G Forum in May 2022.
