Not Ukrainian hackers
A technical glitch shut down websites on the .ru domain, leaving millions of Russians unable to access the internet.
Russia’s Digital Ministry said on Telegram that the problem was caused by a flaw in the global security system for .ru domains, which is meant to protect data from hackers.
However, the system failed to do its job and blocked users from accessing websites on the .ru domain, including some of the country’s most popular and important sites.
According to the state news agency Leah, websites affected by the outage include top local search engine Yandex.ru, online shopping giants Ozon.ru and Wildberries.ru, and the apps of the largest banks Sberbank and VTB. It is said that it was included. , citing Downradar, a service that tracks internet traffic.
The outage caused frustration and confusion among users, who were unable to access online services, check email, or work.
Some users joked that the outage was a sign of a government crackdown on the internet, or a brilliant rehearsal for cyberwar. The only thing no one was kidding about is that it was caused by Ukrainian hackers. That wouldn’t be fun.
Russia’s Digital Ministry said it was working to resolve the issue and urged users to be patient.
However, he did not say how long the outage would last or whether Ukrainian hackers were the cause of the outage in the first place.
