Edina, Minn. — Edina police believe nine robberies over the past six months are related, and residents believe the robbers may have used tools to temporarily disable security systems. She said she was told that she had sex.
Edina police said in a statement last week that the suspected robbers did not choose their targets at random, but instead surveilled homes in wealthy neighborhoods before breaking into them and stealing safes, jewelry and other luxury brand items. It was reported that there was. He also said the robbers were not violent and appeared to choose empty homes to avoid confrontations.
While the city was holding a safety meeting on January 31st, a homeowner was broken into at a home near the Edina Country Club. According to a police report, the sound of glass breaking and screams were heard. Nothing was reported stolen and no one was injured. At the safety meeting, residents said they were warned about robbers using WiFi jammers to affect security systems, especially surveillance cameras.
“Criminals use technology, too,” said cybersecurity expert Mark Lanterman.
Lanterman said WiFi jammers have been around for as long as WiFi has been around.
“These devices create traffic jams at the radio transmitters that prevent real traffic from passing through,” Lanterman said.
Jammers can be purchased online from suppliers outside the United States and range in price from $40 to $1,000. The Federal Communications Commission prohibits their use in the United States.
“If you use a WiFi camera on your front door, consider using a more powerful camera inside your home,” Lanterman advises.
Edina Police are conducting additional patrols in the targeted areas and are advising residents to take additional steps.
- Install a burglar alarm system in your home and be sure to set the alarm when you go out.
- If possible, have the alarm monitoring company contact the police immediately without trying to contact you first.
- Install security cameras and lights outside your home and keep them on at night.
- Install security cameras that can be monitored from your mobile phone.
- Make sure all doors and windows are locked when you leave your home.
- Keep some lights on in your home to make it look like someone is home even when you’re not.
- If you will be away from home for an extended period of time, please notify Edina Dispatch by calling 952-826-1610. Police officers will regularly check your premises for suspicious activity. Also, let your neighbors know that you will be gone.
- Register the camera with Edina’s SafeCam program. If a crime occurs in your neighborhood, the Edina Police Department will obtain your contact information so they can check their cameras for any useful footage. Register on the Edina Police Department website.
- If you see something, say something. All suspicious activity should be reported by calling 911.
