CK Hutchison Networks, known as mobile phone provider Three, submitted plans for 16m street poles and additional equipment cabinets to Knightsfield in November last year.
Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council rejected the application in January after many residents objected that it would restrict footpath access and destroy the streetscape.
However, that decision could be overturned on appeal.
“At this location, the existing mast site cannot support a complement of additional equipment to increase coverage across the target area, and future recessed mast sites are very limited.” The planning statement states:

“New base stations are desperately needed to provide effective service coverage, and in this case the proposed street pole heights are the minimum required to bring the benefits of 5G to the area. It is a height.
“The proposed site options are based on the target area using the selected streetworks pole heights and associated antennas and ground cabinets limited to the minimum height that can provide the required mandatory coverage. It is considered the best compromise between extending 5G services across the coverage hole.”
