Nokia Corporation NOK has established a state-of-the-art 6G research hub in Bangalore, India. This initiative is in line with the Government of India’s ‘Bharat 6G Vision’, which aims to make the country a prominent contributor to 6G development. The newly opened laboratory will serve as a platform to accelerate research collaboration with major research institutions in the region.
Nokia is a key player in 6G development and is actively involved in various projects around the world, including the Next G Alliance in North America and the 6G Flagship Program in Europe.
According to Nokia Bell Labs, there are six key technologies that can play a key role in 6G networks. Network technology as a sensor is an important component of this. This technology allows 6G to generate highly detailed digital versions of the physical world. By reflecting signals off an object, the network can sense the nature, movement, and configuration of that particular element, eliminating the need for onboard sensors. It also integrates seamlessly into wireless networks and works efficiently with communications infrastructure.
A wide range of use cases are possible in a variety of industries, including healthcare, transportation, and education. Network as a Sensor technology also enables remote, direct interaction between humans and machines, allowing humans to send commands to robots with simple hand gestures. In a medical emergency, it can sense a person’s movements and notify medical personnel simply by listening to their heartbeat. It can be used for security purposes in locations where cameras are not available, or to enhance camera functionality in dimly lit or foggy locations.
The India-based facility will primarily focus on fundamental 6G research such as networks as sensors, network exposure, and automation. It also serves as an experimental platform to study algorithms, test new solutions, and design sustainable systems for commercialization. The project will increase Nokia’s presence and improve its commercial prospects in India, one of the fastest growing 5G markets.
