LANSING – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel recognized February 6 as National Safer Internet Day.
Safer Internet Day is an international education and awareness initiative celebrated in over 100 countries. It’s a day that brings the community together to discuss the challenges families face as they navigate the digital world and to help them use technology responsibly and respectfully.
People use the Internet every day to stay connected with friends and family. Schools and educational institutions use it to connect students to tools and resources.
Libraries can share books across the country and create larger virtual libraries. Users visit banks and doctors, order medicines, and shop. But whenever you’re online, you face the possibility of becoming a victim of internet crimes, from cyberbullying and identity theft to fraud and human trafficking.
As our lives become more intertwined with the internet in our daily work, it’s important to protect yourself and your loved ones by using these safety tips when online.
- Protecting your personal information: Protecting your personal information, such as passwords and addresses, helps prevent identity theft and fraud.
- Preventing cyberbullying: Online safety measures reduce the risk of cyberbullying and ensure that the internet remains a positive space for communication and learning.
- Improving digital literacy: Educating individuals about online safety improves their digital literacy and enables them to navigate the online world.
- Promoting responsible citizenship: Encouraging responsible behavior online promotes good digital citizenship and a culture of respect and empathy.
“This Safer Internet Day, we should commit to building a digital environment that prioritizes safety and security,” Nessel said.
“While I always encourage Michigan residents to protect their personal and financial information online, I encourage them to understand how they can participate in online spaces and communities in a way that promotes a secure exchange of information and mutual respect. We also need to pay attention to whether we can do it.”
