“We met with Ericsson last night and with ZTE this morning. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is expected to be signed between the carrier and the equipment provider in the coming days.
“We will explore opportunities to collaborate with Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) to enhance the use of 5G in MSMEs,” he told Bernama and RTM when they met here.
He is currently in Barcelona to lead the Malaysian delegation at MWC 2024 and is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at tomorrow’s conference, hosting the Malaysian pavilion.
MWC 2024 is the telecommunications industry’s largest annual gathering, organized by the international organization Groupe Speciale Mobile Association (GSMA). Barcelona has been chosen as the host city for the conference, which is expected to attract more than 100,000 telecommunications industry professionals.
Led by MCMC, the Malaysia Pavilion will include exhibits from telecommunications companies as well as government agencies such as Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and Cybersecurity Malaysia.
Fahmi said events like MWC showcase a variety of new technologies and equipment that could help in the introduction of 5G in the country if tailored to Malaysia’s conditions.
“We recognize that numerous new technologies are emerging in the digital age, but many remain unimplemented. Forums like MWC provide insight into these innovations, but “It is extremely important to adapt to Malaysia’s regulatory framework and user acceptance, which will be overseen by MCMC,” he said.
Fahmi elaborated that currently, telecommunications companies like ZTE are forming strategic alliances with local universities and DNB to assess the progress of 5G deployment in the country.
“This concern is not just limited to the laboratory, but extends to real-world applications as well. In my opinion, this is where our main focus should be,” Fahmi said.
“What I’m currently discussing with these companies is around potential new business models that encourage companies to own and leverage 5G technology and beyond,” he added.
