Palmdale, California, December 18, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Lockheed Martin Skunk Works® (NYSE: LMT) and Verizon (NYSE, NASDAQ: VZ) have demonstrated 5G streaming of real-time visualization content on edge computing devices to power Department of Defense (DOD) sustainment missions.
As part of the ongoing strategic partnership, the two companies have validated three key technology areas:
- 5G at the edge for latency-critical interactions in complex visualization applications such as augmented reality, virtual reality, and augmented reality experiences
- Stream complex 3D visualization content in real time
- Streaming to edge computing devices such as tablets, mobiles, and head-mounted displays (HMDs)
These technologies enable Lockheed Martin’s “Maintainer as a Node” concept, where connected maintainers receive all information where, when and how they need it, in environments where latency is critical.
“Streaming is the future, and through our strategic collaboration with Verizon, we are jointly advancing critical 21st century security technologies that deliver the speed, efficiency, quality and reliability our customers need most.” says. Mark O’Briensenior manager of virtual prototyping at Lockheed Martin Skunk Works.
This year, Lockheed Martin and Verizon are focusing on content streaming for sustained use cases, where advanced visualization capabilities are critical to supporting maintenance managers in Resilient Logistics in Competitive Environments (RLCE). Ta. Examples of these use cases include:
- 3D step-based work instructions
- Augmented/Virtual/Augmented Reality Content Deployment
- Remote desktop scenarios for high-end real-time 3D applications
- Remote Assistance and other 3D graphics intensive applications
In these cases, we demonstrated a multi-user augmented reality experience across multiple geolocations streaming a large-scale 3D CAD airspace engine in real time. The target display device was HoloLens, using project collaborator Holo-Light’s streaming platform and his Verizon 5G Edge with AWS Wavelength on Verizon’s 5G network. This demonstration highlights the value of future streaming approaches for persistent applications, ensuring data safety and content maintenance efficiently and effectively.
“This initiative demonstrates how Verizon and Lockheed Martin’s partnership will leverage the immense capabilities of 5G and edge computing to transform data streaming and AR experiences, creating advanced capabilities for military sustainment operations. It shows,” he said. chris hultonVice President of Product Strategy and Innovation at Verizon.
This effort coincides with extensive collaboration between Lockheed Martin and Verizon to advance critical 5G.MIL.® Data sharing application for the Department of Defense. Combining commercial and government-driven technologies to improve security, resiliency, interoperability, and performance. This collaboration and demonstration is a prime example of Lockheed Martin’s 21st century security vision to rapidly deliver innovative capabilities to U.S. military customers.
