Jio said the new 5G lab will serve as a testing and development hub for new technologies.
Reliance Jio Infocomm and Chinese consumer electronics maker OnePlus have announced a strategic partnership aimed at promoting 5G technology across India.
The partnership aims to bring together the technological innovations and infrastructure of Jio and OnePlus to offer new experiences to users in the 5G space, the companies said.
Under the terms of the partnership, the companies will establish a state-of-the-art 5G innovation lab to enhance these efforts. The new 5G lab will serve as a testing and development hub for new technologies, the companies said.
“We believe in pushing the boundaries of what is possible and this partnership with Jio is a testament to that commitment. This partnership represents a bold step towards a future of connectivity where innovation knows no limits. Jio and OnePlus India will work together to redefine the 5G landscape in the country,” a OnePlus spokesperson said.
“Today, Jio True 5G has nationwide coverage with its network. 85% of the total 5G deployment in India is being done by Jio. The time has come to deploy a magical 5G experience to our users. This partnership with OnePlus is a step in that direction,” said a Jio spokesperson.
Reliance Jio Infocomm recently completed the rollout of 5G technology in India, local media reported, citing company chairman Mukesh Ambani. Ambani also claimed that the telco has achieved the fastest 5G rollout in the world.
Reliance Jio Infocomm is rapidly expanding its 5G network using Standalone (SA) architecture starting October 2022.
Reliance Jio had secured a mix of radio spectrum for 5G across 700 MHz, 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz bands. Jio is the only Indian operator with spectrum in the 700 MHz band.
In September 2023, local press reported that Reliance Jio Infocomm had partnered with French bank BNP Paribas as lead arrangers for the initiative to help finance the purchase of 5G network equipment from Swedish vendor Ericsson. The company confirmed that it aims to raise up to $2 billion in financing.
Jio also announced that its 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) service called JioAirFiber will cover pan-India within the first half of 2024, according to Indian reports.
The telco’s 5G FWA services are already available in over 4,000 towns and cities across India.
The company announced that it will launch 5G FWA services in eight cities nationwide in September 2023. The service was initially launched in the cities of Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune.
