In a comprehensive analysis conducted by connectivity testing company MedUX, Berlin has emerged as the top candidate to offer the best 5G experience in major European cities. The study included extensive testing in cities such as Barcelona, Paris, Lisbon, Milan, Porto, Rome, Madrid, Munich, and London, and along with its impressive performance, data and over-the-top (OTT) Berlin’s excellent performance in experiences was highlighted. The overall score was 4.69 out of 5.
The study was conducted in the second and third quarters of last year, with MedUX personnel driving over 4,000 kilometers to thoroughly assess the 5G networks in these cities. This assessment focused on some key aspects of 5G technology, such as coverage, speed, and reliability, and provided a detailed insight into the current state of 5G connectivity in Europe.
Porto stood out with an exceptional coverage rate of 90%, while Milan was recognized for its reliability with an impressive 99.91% success rate for internet sessions. But it was Berlin that caught our attention with its quick loading times and solid overall performance.
Conversely, London sits at the bottom of the rankings, particularly struggling with average user speeds of 143 Mbps, compared to Lisbon and Porto’s speeds of 528 Mbps and 446 Mbps, respectively. Rafael Galarreta, chief marketing officer at MedUX, revealed the challenges facing the UK in an interview with CNBC. He cited the country’s network speed, accessibility and network responsiveness as areas where the UK was significantly lacking.
Galarreta also suggested that Britain’s decision to exclude Huawei from its 5G infrastructure may have contributed to London’s disappointing performance. He explained that this decision, made after initial deployment, would likely hinder the city’s network coverage, availability, and overall user experience.
