The older I get (and the busier my life is with growing children), the less I care about and rely on social media as a source of information and entertainment. But while I’d like to completely cut ties with social networks, there are some things that keep me hooked. Firstly, the fact that I work from home and have limited social interaction (I legitimately keep up with friends through Instagram), and secondly, my aesthetic Love and the desire to consume the latest and greatest in everyday fashion.
Over the past few years, we’ve seen fashion content expand beyond the boundaries of Pinterest, finding a foothold between Instagram’s grid and TikTok’s scrolling interface. The latter in particular has been the driving force behind trends and highly stylized microtrends. These aesthetics often reflect cultures, each encapsulating a particular lifestyle. In 2020, cottagecore became an idyllic escape for everyone isolated at home. In 2021, culture frequently referred to post-pandemic life, and Y2K became our nostalgic coping mechanism as people began to reenter society and embrace the “new normal.” etc.
It’s 2024, and the TikTok-driven fashion aesthetic shows no signs of slowing down. Although it’s early this year, we’ve already seen some new micro-styles delivered through algorithms, such as Romancecore and Eclectic Grandpa. Among this new lineup, the very clear frontrunner right now is Ballet Core.
What is ballet core?
Unlike its other more poetic cousins (see: Coastal Grandma), balletcore is a very easy concept to understand and is easy to identify on first glance.
As the name suggests, it is a fashion aesthetic inspired by the art of ballet and the clothing worn by those who practice ballet. The trend focuses on femininity and romanticism, leaning towards delicate fabrics and muted colors. As a micro-trend in everyday wear, balletcore means incorporating ballet-inspired fashion pieces into your street look, rather than dressing up as a full-fledged ballerina.
Obvious signs of balletcore attire include ballet flats, fine knits, bodysuits, romantic skirts, and flashy “girly” accessories (such as ribbon hairpieces and jewelry, lace tights, and ruffled socks) . Colors that indicate this style include pastels (particularly pink and blue), metallics, and classic black and white.
Balletcore first began to make its presence felt in 2022, but it really became popular at the end of 2023. J. Crew, one of my own favorite retailers, has wisely fueled the popularity and made this trend more accessible to the fashion-loving masses. Last year during the holiday season, he collaborated with the New York City Ballet. This movement is now being replicated by Reformation. The collaboration collection with the famous dance company is so gorgeous that it will make any fashion lover’s jaw hit the floor.
How to succeed at Ballet Core as a mother
This may sound extreme, but for most of us moms, wearing a tulle skirt every day probably isn’t a realistic option. Of course, if you feel that way, I salute you. That said, as with any trend, there are ways to incorporate aesthetics into parenting-friendly attire.
One of the reasons Ballet Core is especially approachable for moms is that it prioritizes comfort. After all, there are many who claim that ballet is not an art, but a sport. Dancers need clothes that allow them to move freely. Moms may not be pirouetting all day long, but they’re certainly known for their active lifestyles. Here are some ideas for incorporating ballet core into your costume.
buy ballet shoes
Ballet shoes are now mom’s best friend. Super trendy in every way, this shoe (naturally) will make any outfit fit your ballet-core aesthetic. I personally like them as a mommy fashion staple because they’re easy to wear while carrying my 1-year-old and my 3-year-old out the door. It can be paired with all kinds of bottoms, from jeans to skirts and pants.
When in doubt, add a hair ribbon
Hair ribbons tap into the romanticism of aesthetics while also giving moms a fun and easy way to dress up an updo (i.e., a messy bun) or tie back hair that hasn’t been shampooed in several days. If you use a hair ribbon barrette, you can create a simple half-up look that moms will love.
consider textiles
Balletcore is all about romantic femininity. Textiles offer an easy way to instantly nail the micro-her on-trend elements. Ornamental and performance-ready materials (if you choose to do so), such as silk and tulle scream ballet core, as well as many other textiles that are considered more practical for everyday wear. Cashmere, velvet, satin, and ribbed cotton all give a nod (bow?) to that aesthetic.
Choose calm colors
As mentioned above, this trend is rooted in soft and ethereal colors. Common shades found within the ballet core spectrum include muted pinks and blues, creams, and black. When considering these colors, keep in mind that you are not limited to just choosing a top. These colors are especially interesting and on-trend when sported with skirts and shoes.

sweater + maxi skirt + ballet shoes
If you’re a busy mom who’s on the go (wait, that might be every mom) and also enjoy feeling put together, then a cozy sweater and maxi skirt combo in a pale on-trend color will do the trick for you. This is the official ballet core costume for. Use solid colors (like all pink or all cream) to create a statement ensemble.

Tunic sweater + leggings + leg warmers
It’s been a hot day since leggings went “in”, but I don’t think I’m the only mom who’s hesitant to say goodbye to the bottoms that were once every woman’s choice. When you want a snug fit, revive leggings in your closet with romantic accessories like leg warmers and hair bows. Tunic sweaters pair well with leggings and (yay!) are making a comeback.

Beret + tights + pea coat
As a mother of two young children, I find myself reaching for tights and skort combinations more than you might think. Once the sweater is tucked in, the clothes are surprisingly comfortable and convenient for hanging out with the kids. Light-colored boots and a white or cream-colored peacoat align the outfit with a ballet-core aesthetic, while a feminine pink beret complements the look.
