Gov. Jay Inslee signed an executive order Tuesday directing the state’s IT agency to develop new guidelines for generative AI like ChatGPT.
The goal is to use AI technology to increase transparency and observe risks and benefits for Washingtonians.
The governor said AI raises cybersecurity and privacy concerns.
The order also calls for the state Office of Equity to oversee the accountability framework.
Over the next year, WaTech will work with the Governor’s Cabinet to report on the potential challenges and opportunities of AI.
The governor said his goal is to ensure the state uses AI ethically and transparently.
“This executive order establishes a one-year process for agencies to collaborate to assess the feasibility, benefits, and challenges of integrating this technology into agency operations and services.” he said. “It is our duty to the public to be thorough and thoughtful about how we employ these powerful new tools.”
The executive order states that states will evaluate AI in the workforce by December 2024. Then create a program to help employees integrate AI into their work and reduce negative impacts.
By January 2025, the state plans to create research opportunities and partnerships to “advance innovation and expansion of generative AI technology education.”
The purpose, according to the order, is to provide new opportunities with AI for students and researchers.
“Whatever the dangers or promise of generative AI, we have just scratched the surface in understanding this new technology,” the governor wrote.
