Ericsson Media Release | November 30, 2023
- Global 5G subscribers expected to exceed 5.3 billion by end of 2029
- Global average data consumption per smartphone continues to grow significantly – predicted to increase from 21 GB per month to 56 GB per month between 2023 and 2029
- 85% of the world’s population will have access to 5G coverage by the end of 2029
Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) has proven its growth resilience despite continued economic challenges and geopolitical uncertainty in some markets, and expects to be in the global mobile market by the end of 2023. We estimate that nearly one in five contracts will be 5G contracts. This statistic, presented in the November 2023 edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report, shows that there will be 610 million new 5G contracts in calendar year 2023, an increase of 63% compared to 2022, and a global total of 16 It is estimated that there will be approximately 100 million cases. That was more than previously predicted.
The latest report (25th edition) presents a new upper-bound timeline for statistical projections to 2028-2029. Consistent with recent editions, the November 2023 report confirms enhancements in mobile broadband, fixed wireless access, gaming, and AR/VR. Based services are among the most common early consumer use cases for 5G.
Regionally, 5G subscriber adoption continues to be strong in North America. By the end of 2023, the region’s 5G subscription penetration rate is expected to be 61%, the highest in the world. In India, his 5G subscriber growth was also strong throughout 2023. By the end of 2023, 14 months after commercial launch, 5G penetration in India is expected to exceed 11%.
Over the six years from the end of 2023 to 2029, the number of 5G subscribers worldwide is expected to grow by more than 330%, from 1.6 billion to 5.3 billion. 5G coverage is expected to be available to more than 45 percent of the world’s population by the end of 2023 and more than 85 percent by the end of 2029. North America and the Gulf Cooperation Council are expected to have the highest regional 5G penetration rate by the end of 2029, with a rate of 92%. Western Europe is expected to follow with 85% penetration.
Fredrik Jedling, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks at Ericsson, said: “With more than 600 million 5G subscriptions added worldwide this year, and growth in every region, it’s clear that demand for high-performance connectivity is strong. The number of 5G standalone networks is increasing, creating an opportunity to support new and more demanding applications for both consumers and businesses.”
The global average data consumption per smartphone continues to increase. Total mobile data traffic is estimated to increase three times from the end of 2023 to the end of 2029. This is due to factors such as improved device capabilities, increased data-intensive content, and continued improvements in the performance of deployed networks.
Peter Johnson, executive editor of Ericsson’s Ericsson Mobility Report, said: “The rate of data growth in mobile networks clearly reflects consumer passion for powering mobile broadband-related applications. As more consumers around the world adopt 5G, new use cases emerge. This trend will further accelerate and cause further growth in data traffic as the world grows. Most traffic is generated indoors, where people typically spend most of their time, ensuring a comprehensive 5G experience everywhere. There is a growing need to extend 5G mid-band coverage both indoors and outdoors.”
5G mid-band combines high capacity with good coverage, making it an ideal choice to provide a complete 5G experience. His 5G mid-band population coverage of the world is now over 40%, increasing from 30% in 2022. This growth is primarily driven by large mid-band deployments in India, but there are also some mid-band deployments in Europe.
This report explores wireless connectivity in manufacturing, how 5G is becoming a key determinant of output, and how 5G enables the agility needed to support rapid change and reallocation of resources. We are also investigating.
The Ericsson Mobility Report for November 2023 includes three in-depth articles:
- Massive 5G SA deployment to drive India’s digital transformation.
- The demand for indoor connectivity is driving the need for improved performance.
- 5G Readiness Agility in Gigafactories and Green Steel Mills
