NEW DELHI: To promote safe and connected mobility, 5G technology, the fifth generation wireless communication network, has the potential to be a game-changer for India’s auto industry, says director of Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). Dr. Regi Mathai believes. According to him, the global connectivity penetration rate is around 30%, but in some countries like Japan it is as high as 90%. Connected services in India are expected to grow almost four times.
“Digitalization and IoT are moving faster than we think. Customers are expecting digital services in their vehicles not because they are used to them, but because they are new to them. Because we know we are safe, even though there is still a lot to do,” said Reji Mathai at the 4th ETAuto Connected Vehicle Summit in New York. Delhi.

Regarding 5G applications in the automotive industry, he said, “5G is enabling safer and connected mobility, and we are taking it very seriously. We are evaluating what we can offer and are looking at partnerships in this area.”
ARAI is currently working on evaluating this and submitting it to the government for formulating appropriate policies, he said, adding that startups are playing a supporting role in this area.
According to Mathai, Indian consumers have a strong interest in connectivity, but the transition to 5G presents greater challenges. This includes cybersecurity, data security, data ownership, and skilled human resources.
“Infotainment is evolving in a big way right now. The bigger challenge now is how the vehicle communicates with its surroundings,” he said.
“Skilled talent is also an issue, and even if you get talent, you’ll lose it within a year,” he added.
