Grand County residents and businesses that rely on Xfinity as their internet provider experienced an outage that began on the morning of February 3 and lasted nearly 24 hours. The outage also affected his Xfinity cable service.
Xfinity confirmed that customers experienced internet outages in Granby, Winter Park, Fraser, Kremmling, Tavernash, Grand Lake and Hot Sulfur Springs. Individuals who have signed up to receive messages from their internet provider may have received a text message informing them of the outage. Some of you may have noticed that your internet is not working properly.
The cause of the outage was network damage. Xfinity representative Leslie Oliver said some of his fiber network was damaged by snowplows removing snow and ice.
Once the damaged area was determined to be safe for work, technicians began work to make necessary repairs and restore service. Xfinity technicians worked around the clock to repair the splices and fibers. Oliver said these efforts were made difficult by weather conditions.
The power outage lasted from about 8 a.m. Saturday morning until about 4 a.m. Sunday morning. Customers can also apply for suspension credits by signing into their Xfinity account online and filling out a simple request.
According to a Facebook post by the City of Kremling, 20,000 residential subscribers, 18 fiber-optic business customers and five cell phone base stations were affected by the power outage.
Xfinity offers Storm-Ready Wifi, which includes Storm-Ready devices and battery backup to keep your home online for up to four hours in the event of a cellular data network or power outage. During a power outage, storm-enabled devices switch from a broadband connection to a cellular connection.
