Live from MWC Las Vegas 2023:With a lack of regulatory action, the U.S. risks losing global leadership in 5G and ceding influence in future spectrum policy to countries like China, said CTIA Chairman and CEO Meredith. Mr. Atwell Baker (caught in the photo) warned.
In his keynote address, Atwell Baker spoke about the country’s current position in the global 5G ecosystem, but lamented current issues with spectrum allocation and lack of action towards the upcoming 2023 ITU World Radiocommunication Conference. Ta.
He added that the country had “taken a step backwards in global leadership” and said: “With major international conferences scheduled in the coming months, there is no clear-cut decision to lead discussions on the key 5G bands of today and tomorrow. There’s no vision.
“We are allowing China and other countries to shape these decisions. This lack of action jeopardizes our nation’s leadership in 5G and future industries, leaving the United States a technology island and cost-effective.” There is a risk that the market will rise and lose its influence.”
He added that the mobile industry will require almost 1,500MHz of additional spectrum over the next decade to meet expected future data requirements, while other countries recognize similar needs. He claimed to be acting much more quickly.
“This summer, China took the plunge and released 700MHz of new mid-band spectrum, which is more than we have achieved in the past 10 years,” she added.
“For our economic security and national security, it is critical that a Congressional administration renews our commitment to leading the world in spectrum and 5G.”
Her call to action comes as the country’s FCC is unable to allocate spectrum after politicians failed to renew its authority earlier this year, a situation Atwell Baker has long criticized. .
