Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) wins 5G core network order from the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) to build Rakel G2, the country’s critical communications network for emergency services, public safety and national defence. Did.
Enhanced situational awareness, facilitated by secure and rapid ways to share voice, data, images, and video, allows police, fire departments, emergency medical services, and military organizations to work together more effectively.
First responders and their organizations need safe, accessible, and resilient resources to not only prevent and prepare for crises and emergencies, but also to leverage available resources when they occur. It is important to have a communication network. Secure and quality-assured communication capabilities can be critical to saving lives in such emergencies, especially when multiple agencies are involved.
Ronny Harpe, Rakel and Director of Command Operating Systems at MSB. “A prerequisite for cooperation in our national defense is access to robust, modern, and dedicated communications systems. Investing in such systems strengthens Sweden’s ability to cooperate on a daily basis and lead mission-critical operations. Not only that, but also strengthened in the event of a potential large-scale crisis.”
Ericsson MSB’s new dual-mode 5G core network will be a key part of Sweden’s Next Generation Public Protection Disaster Relief (PPDR) mission-critical mobile network, called Rakel G2.
Jenny Lindqvist, Head of Europe and Latin America Market Area at Ericsson, said: “By delivering Ericsson’s latest 5G core technology, we are supporting MSB’s mission to strengthen Sweden’s nationally critical networks. It is the most versatile and capable technology available to meet these demanding communications requirements.”
In the initial stage, the 5G core network developed by Ericsson will serve as a complementary infrastructure to MSB’s existing national radio communications system, Rakel. Rakel is built on Tetra standards. Rakel is used by over 650 organizations representing various government departments, including law enforcement, customs, military defense, coast guard, rescue services, and healthcare.
In 2024, implementation of the new backbone network will begin.
