Commercialization of sixth-generation 6G communications is still far away, but that doesn’t prevent countries and companies from conducting a series of tests. For example, Samsung is conducting such tests, but does not expect this standard to be widespread until his 2030 year. Similarly, China Mobile also does not expect to launch 6G in the near future and has launched a special companion.
Although there is no official name for the 6G satellite, a report in China Daily announced that it is the world’s first low-orbit test satellite to use 6G communications. It was developed by the operator and the development team of the Microsatellite Innovation Academy of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The satellite supports a variety of autonomous features specifically designed to enable 6G. Both the software and hardware will reportedly be developed in China and support on-orbit software reconfiguration, flexible deployment of core network functions, and automated management. According to China Mobile, all these features combined ensure efficient and reliable operation of the satellite network in orbit.
China Mobile intends to conduct more in-orbit tests, but has not yet announced the launch date for the 6G standard. Currently, a 5G successor isn’t planned for more than a few years, but that doesn’t mean it can’t undergo extensive testing to prepare for the future, Wccftech reports.
