HOWARD – Cellcom on Monday became the third wireless carrier to activate its 5G wireless network in the Green Bay area.
The company, a subsidiary of communications provider Nsight, announced Monday that it launched its 5G network, the next generation of high-speed wireless technology, at locations in Brown, Shawano and Langlade counties this week.
It joins T-Mobile and US Cellular in providing 5G service in the Brown County area. According to the Ookla 5G map, T-Mobile has seven 5G locations in the county, and US Cellular has three.
Cellcom plans to continue expanding its 5G network across Brown, Door, Kewaunee, Manitowoc and Shawano throughout the remainder of this year. Counties targeted for expansion include Brown, Door, Kewaunee, Manitowoc and Shawano counties.
“The launch of 5G in Brown County is just the beginning,” said Cellcom CEO Brighid Riordan. “Cellcom is committed to building a network that serves not only cities, but also towns and rural communities throughout Wisconsin.”
Customers in select areas of Green Bay, De Pere, Howard, Suamico, Pulaski, Denmark, Belle Plaine and Antigo will have access to the 5G network. The company said it has also upgraded its 4G LTE network to complement its 5G services.
Cellcom’s 5G webpage states that the new network should be 10-15% faster than 4G LTE services. The company plans to introduce its 5G+ later this year, which could bring average speeds to 1 Gbit/s, about 10 times faster than 4G LTE speeds.
Riordan became Nsight’s fifth CEO in January in its 112-year history. The privately held company has maintained its independence through decades of consolidation in the telecommunications industry.
In a recent interview with the Press-Gazette, Riordan said Nsight is building an entirely new network core for its 5G network and wants to make sure the network meets the company’s standards before announcing a rollout. said.

While consumers will find that 5G networks offer faster and more responsive services, the true potential of next-generation networks remains to be realized by manufacturers, healthcare providers, and other businesses. Mr. Riordan said.
“The super speed of a doctor in London performing a surgery in the United States, that’s the kind of game-changer that 5G is,” Riordan said. “The transformational stuff is what’s exciting about it.”
