The Biden administration plans to name a top White House aide to head the new Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute.
WASHINGTON — The Biden administration on Wednesday plans to name a top White House aide to head the newly created Artificial Intelligence Security Institute, according to an administration official who asked not to be identified discussing the position.
Elizabeth Kelly will lead the AI Safety Institute at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, part of the Department of Commerce. Kelly, who currently serves as President Joe Biden’s economic policy adviser, played a key role in drafting the executive order signed in late October establishing the institute, administration officials said.
In a draft announcement obtained by The Associated Press, White House National Economic Council Director Lael Brainard said Kelly would “shape the president’s agenda on technology and financial regulation and build a broad coalition of stakeholders.” I tried to do that.”
The new institute will play an important role in accelerating the development of the technology. It plans to develop “red team” testing standards for major AI developers by July to ensure their systems are safe for consumers and businesses.
The government believes safety testing is necessary to maximize the benefits of rapidly advancing technology and create a level of confidence that will enable widespread adoption of AI.
The federal government recently began requiring AI companies to test their systems. But for now, these tests lack a universal set of standards, which the institute plans to complete this summer.
Kelly is a Yale Law School graduate who also worked in President Obama’s White House and at the financial firm Capital One, according to his LinkedIn page.
