According to Chinese media, Chinese telecommunications companies had already installed 114,500 5G base stations in the capital Beijing as of the end of April.
According to the report, Beijing’s 5G base station density is 52 per 10,000 people, ranking first in China, officials said.
“Beijing is vigorously promoting a signal upgrade campaign focused on improving network coverage in key areas,” said Su Shaolin, director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Communications.
The report also noted that the number of 5G mobile subscribers in Beijing reached 21.27 million as of the end of April, accounting for 53.1% of the city’s total mobile users. In addition, the report said that Beijing has built a total of 862 5G virtual private networks in various industries, focusing on smart education, healthcare, tourism, media convergence, internet-connected vehicles and industrial internet.
According to previous reports, Chinese telecommunications operators had installed 92,000 5G base stations in China’s financial capital, Shanghai, as of the end of February. By the end of 2023, 38.5% of the city’s mobile base stations will be 5G base stations.
According to reports, Shanghai had a total of more than 18.7 million 5G mobile phone users as of the end of last year, up about 40 percent from the previous year. According to the Shanghai Municipal Communications Bureau, 5G subscribers accounted for 40.8 percent of Shanghai’s total mobile phone users.
According to the latest data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), Chinese telecommunications operators had deployed more than 3.5 million 5G base stations across the country as of the end of February.
Currently, 5G base stations account for approximately 29% of China’s total mobile base stations, up 7.8 percentage points from the end of 2022.
The penetration rate of 5G technology in China is expected to reach 90% by the end of 2023, local newspaper Global Times previously reported, citing an executive at domestic telecommunications operator China Mobile.
Bian Yannan, deputy director of planning and construction at China Mobile, said the penetration rate is expected to be achieved by deploying 360,000 5G base stations in 2023.
According to GSMA’s Mobile Economy China 2024, China is expected to lead the world in 5G adoption, reaching 90% by 2030. The report predicts that the Asian country will surpass 1 billion 5G connections by the end of 2024, and that by 2030, the number of connections will soar to 1.6 billion, contributing $260 billion to China’s GDP.
