North Ayrshire Council said this follows on from commitments made in Kilmarnock and saw collaboration between the Scottish 5G Centre, Ayrshire Council, the University of the West of Scotland, Ayrshire University and the Scottish National Manufacturing Association.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will also be signed as the partners develop their proposals for the 5G Innovation Region.
Councilor Marie Burns, Leader of North Ayrshire Council and Chair of the Ayrshire Economy Joint Committee, said: “When we launched the Ayrshire Regional Strategy last year, the digital economy was at the forefront of our plans and we were committed to ‘5G Innovation. “It was becoming a ‘region’.” This underlines our ambition to make Ayrshire a center of digital excellence.
“We are currently making plans and there are exciting times ahead.”
Last year, Ayrshire received £3.7 million in funding from the UK Government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology to transform it into a region equipped with advanced 5G and wireless technology.
The council said the aid will help integrate 5G technology into three key strategic Ayrshire growth trading hubs, with the Scottish 5G Center (S5GC) Innovation Hub in HALO (Kilmarnock) becoming a testing hub for 5G innovation. It is planned to be used.
Other facilities include the National Manufacturing Institute of Scotland (NMIS) Digital Processing Manufacturing Center (DPMC) at the i3 Enterprise Area in Irvine, the Aerospace Innovation Hub at Prestwick International Air and Space Park, and the Ayrshire Center at Moorfield, Kilmarnock. Guest speakers at the event explained how collaboration between Congress, businesses, and technology providers is critical to advancing 5G innovation.
Ian Sharpe, Head of Strategy and Delivery at the Scottish 5G Center, said: “Following the 5G Innovation Region funding, Ayrshire is working hard to ensure the region is working hard as it seeks to make the most of the benefits of 5G technology. It’s great to see it being done.”
“This technology has huge potential and can benefit businesses of all types and sizes, from family-owned food businesses to large-scale manufacturing.”
Businesses are being invited to take part in the Ayrshire 5G Innovation Regional Project.
