Vienna—Ateme, in collaboration with ORS Group, a leading Austrian service provider for analog and digital broadcasting, announced that it has conducted “the world’s first trial of IP-based StatMux over 5G Broadcast.” The trial is notable as it provides a way to increase 5G broadcast capacity for live streaming services.
NextGen Statmux will be exhibited at IBC 2024, Booth 1D61.
The groundbreaking trial leveraged Ateme’s NextGen StatMux technology, designed to work with the latest broadcast standards from 3GPP, DVB and ATSC, moving from a traditional transport stream environment to an IP-based one. ORS Group integrated the solution into Vienna’s 5G broadcast Nakolos platform, enabling the transmission and reception of a multiplex of five services, Ateme reported.
As 5G broadcast becomes more widespread towards enabling linear TV on mobile devices, broadcasters are faced with the challenge of efficiently using limited spectrum widths, such as the UHF channels (6, 7 or 8 MHz) allocated for terrestrial TV. By focusing on small screens instead of home TVs, broadcasters can offer multiple services within the same spectrum while maintaining high picture quality.
The companies noted that statistical multiplexing is crucial as it delivers efficiency gains of up to 20% compared to existing solutions and allows additional services to be delivered within the same 5G broadcast band, helping broadcasters offer a wider range of services with optimal quality of experience.
“This trial successfully demonstrated the benefits that a very smooth integration into the ORS 5G broadcast environment can bring to this emerging market. We are excited to work with ORS Group, a pioneer in 5G broadcast, on the integration and maturation of our 5G broadcast solution,” said Julien Mandel, Senior Solution Marketing Director at Ateme.
“The world’s first test of statistical multiplexing in an operational 5G broadcast environment in Vienna shows that spectral efficiency can be further increased with 5G Broadcast, which will also contribute to strengthening the future business models of broadcast network operators operating 5G Broadcast. We are pleased to continue testing and developing this innovative solution for 5G Broadcast in cooperation with Ateme,” said Dr. Johan Mika, Chief Innovation Officer of the ORS Group.
