Bharti Airtel (Airtel), India’s leading telecom solutions provider, and Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) have successfully demonstrated mmWave 5G capabilities on the Airtel network. Peak speeds of 4.7 Gbps were achieved during testing, demonstrating the applicability of mmWave for high network capacity requirements.
Ericsson Media Release | February 21, 2024
5G highband or millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum is a valuable resource when targeting densely populated urban areas with large numbers of mobile devices, homes, and businesses. High bands above 24 gigahertz (GHz) offer service providers the opportunity to offer unprecedented peak rates, low latency, and high capacity.
Randeep Singh Sekhon, CTO, Bharti Airtel, said: “The peak throughput we experienced during testing gave us confidence to deploy mm Wave in our FWA applications. Not only is it useful, but it can also cover a large number of users who were previously unable to connect due to lack of access to fiber optic connections.Fixed wireless access (FWA) is an efficient and scalable alternative to wired connections. ”
Nunzio Miltillo, Head of Ericsson South East Asia, Oceania and India, said: “5G demonstrations in the 26GHz band are currently underway and are an important step in demonstrating how mmWave can be scaled up and integrated into commercial mobile networks.”With extensive investment in research and development, His deep knowledge, experience, and multiple 5G mmWave patents have resulted. We have a leading portfolio in the world’s 5G mmWave patent field and fully own the technology we use. ”
Ericsson is uniquely positioned to realize the full potential of highband by co-designing purpose-built hardware and innovative software powered by Ericsson silicon. Ericsson’s mmWave portfolio for macro and street macro levels provides Airtel with an opportunity to seamlessly provide high-capacity connectivity to urban dwellers using FWA solutions.
According to Ericsson’s FWA Handbook 2024 Insights, FWA connections worldwide are expected to grow from 130 million at the end of 2023 to 330 million by the end of 2029. This represents 18 percent of all fixed broadband connections. Of his projected 330 million connections, nearly 85 percent are expected to be via 5G. As of November 2023, 50 of the 121 service providers offering 5G FWA are in emerging markets.
