FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A $1 million grant has been awarded to the West Hills Community District for a project aimed at bringing affordable broadband service to rural areas and farms in the Central Valley. Ta.
WHCCD officials say the grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will play a vital role in establishing the Rural Broadband Initiative Collaborative Network (Project RuBICON).
This project aims to empower local communities by creating a cooperative that provides reliable and cost-effective broadband access and bridging the digital divide in rural Central Valley. Officials say the initiative draws inspiration from the historic electric cooperative movement and envisions equitable change and progress in rural America in the 21st century.
“This is not just about broadband access; it’s about promoting sustainable agriculture, building strong local economies, and empowering rural communities for a digital future,” said WHCCD Deputy Director of Information Technology. said Dean Jeff Seed. “This project is designed to facilitate cost-effective broadband deployment and aims to serve as a model that can be replicated across the country.”
