CHe’sburger was how I discovered the internet. Before memes were memes. From there, a whole bunch of rabbit holes went down: 4chan trolls, creepy kinds of pasta, Wholockians rolling on Tumblr, “Fluff” originating from fanfiction.net, rickrolls on YouTube, “liking” the “Taking Your Girl to Macca’s Cause She’s the One” page on Facebook, men on Vine who sit five feet away from me because they’re not gay. The internet just kept growing… Instagram. Twitter. Snapchat. Tinder. Bumble. TikTok. Stories. Reels. Shorts. ChatGPT. Before I doomscroll, sometimes I ask myself… “Can I have a cheeseburger?”

Any Islander will know what I’m talking about. I’ve slept on the 756 bus. On the T1 Western train. On the floor of my family’s old Tarrago during a road trip to Melbourne. At a Hillsong Church service. Twice during my HSC Biology exam. On the head of my grandmother’s open coffin.
4. My Habits
This video is what I send whenever a family member tries to intervene to discuss how they are portrayed in my novel.
5. This song is timeless
Whether it’s propaganda denying your country’s war crimes or your ex-boyfriend trying to gaslight you, this song is always the perfect response.
6. This was (and still is) America
Unlike Mike Myers and Chris Tucker, I miss the old Kanye.
7. Public Service Announcements
White supremacists will no doubt call me a reverse racist for this!
8. Racism 101

On the morning of October 18th, 2023, I woke up to my usual routine: I wiped the drool off my face and reached for my phone across the bed to see what messages (if any) I’d received overnight. I was surprised to find 11 messages from 11 friends and family with links to this interview. Thank you to Bassem Youssef, who has long used comedy as a tool of resistance.
