According to Reuters, workers said the building’s massive roof was engulfing the traffic lights.
Employees at Google’s newest office in San Francisco have been suffering from poor Wi-Fi for months, forcing them to rely on Ethernet connections to get work done, Reuters reported.
The company’s Bayview office in Mountain View “has suffered from inoperable or, at best, unreliable Wi-Fi for months,” the report said.
Reuters reported, citing six people familiar with the matter but whose names were not disclosed.
The newspaper said Google employees were relying on Ethernet cables and phone hotspots, and some were told to work from on-site cafes or walk outside to improve connectivity.
Employees seem to have their own theories about how bad the Internet is. They said the shape of the roof was eating up the airwaves like a “Bermuda Triangle,” writes Greg Bensinger of Reuters.
Google’s Bayview headquarters, which opened in May 2022, is the company’s first large-scale office space designed and built in-house.
The stylish 1.1 million square foot campus includes a variety of perks and extras, including an on-campus hotel, a laundry room, a stationary bike that can be used to charge your cell phone, and a roof fitted with a “dragon scale solar skin.” I am. To power buildings.
Based on the inside view, you can see how the WiFi-absorbing roof theory emerged. Google’s first video showing the campus shows giant curved panels towering over an outdoor office space the company calls the “Team District.”
A Google spokesperson told Reuters that “Bayview is experiencing WiFi connectivity issues,” and that the company is working on a fix.
Google has been asking employees to return to the office at least three days a week since April 2022, at a time when many tech companies still had remote work policies.
A racism controversy over the company’s new generative AI model Gemini led to a sale of $90 billion worth of company stock in February, and poor Wi-Fi isn’t such a big deal these days. There is.
As Business Insider’s Hugh Langley and Lara O’Reilly write, the tech company is struggling, especially as new AI technologies sweep the world and call into question Silicon Valley’s status as a wonder child. And they are struggling to stay ahead of the competition.
Google did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment sent outside of normal business hours.
Correction: March 8, 2024 — An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated when Google opened its Bayview campus. It was May 2022, not March 2022. The size of the campus was also incorrectly stated. That’s 1.1 million square feet, not 600,000 square feet.
