Of course, 46Gbps is a theoretical maximum under perfect laboratory conditions. Home networks rarely reach speeds close to these. Still, upgrading to a Wi-Fi 7 router will allow you to take better advantage of multi-gigabit fiber, allowing all your wireless devices to receive faster Wi-Fi speeds.
2 Increased throughput
Wi-Fi 7 introduces two significant upgrades designed to increase network throughput and capacity: 320MHz Wi-Fi channels and 4K Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM).
Wi-Fi routers transmit signals over the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands (though Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 routers also broadcast on the new 6 GHz band). Within these bands are Wi-Fi channels through which your router sends data to your devices.
Think of Wi-Fi bands as highways and Wi-Fi channels as lanes. The more people using one channel, the more likely it is to become crowded. Each Wi-Fi channel has a set capacity measured in MHz. The lower this number, the more likely the channel’s data throughput will be degraded. Wider channels (more MHz) can process more data faster, resulting in faster perceived internet speeds.
Quadrature amplitude modulation is a little different, but they work together. Modulation effectively measures the amount of data transmitted in each signal. Upgrading Wi-F7 from Wi-Fi 6’s 1024-QAM to 4K-QAM significantly increases network efficiency and reduces latency, especially in situations where a large number of Wi-Fi devices are connected.
3 Less congestion and supports 6GHz Wi-Fi
