We asked EE’s head of broadband how to stop Wi-Fi blackspots

Suffering from a black hole in your home Wi-Fi coverage? Not sure where the best spot for your broadband router is?

From watching TV, organizing your finances, listening to music, checking the latest headlines, applying for jobs, paying council tax, and keeping in touch with friends and family, so much of our lives can be done in a sane way. Completely dependent on internet connection. It’s more important than ever to avoid poor signal quality or slow speeds.

To get the best advice on how to ensure a strong Wi-Fi connection throughout your home, GB News went straight to the top and asked Matt Hughes, Director of Broadband, TV and Home at EE.

BT-owned EE knows a thing or two about broadband, as it boasts some of the fastest home internet speeds in the country, with downloads of over 1.6Gbps (1,600Mbps). This is 23 times faster than the average home broadband speed measured by Ofcom last year.

Of course, most people don’t need such impressive speeds. For reference, Netflix recommends a minimum of 5Mbps to watch shows in high-definition (HD) quality. Still, you need to ensure that your Wi-Fi signal reaches every corner of your home.

EE has built a guide into the app to help you find the best placement for your extender. If you’re not on EE, Matt recommends placing your extender in a position where it maintains a good connection. Don’t leave your extender on the edge of a Wi-Fi signal. It doesn’t work well.

EE Press Office

GB News asked EE’s Director of Broadband if there are any lesser-known settings on your Wi-Fi router that you should enable to improve overall performance.

“Most Wi-Fi router settings automatically optimize for the strongest Wi-Fi performance,” says Matt Hughes. “Settings can be done manually, but it’s best left to someone with technical knowledge. The best way to improve Wi-Fi performance is to change settings.

“People who believe they have an old Wi-Fi router should talk to their broadband provider to see if they can offer them a new router. Consumers may have to pay landline charges to connect. You should choose the most flexible broadband provider, such as one where you don’t have to pay.

“The physical placement of your router also has a big impact on your signal. Placing your router in the center of your home and off the floor is the best approach to optimizing signal strength.”

Even with perfect placement, it can be difficult to get your Wi-Fi signal to reach every corner of your home. Wireless Internet is delivered via radio waves sent and received between your device and Wi-Fi. router. generally twoAvailable frequencies — 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

Similar to sound waves, these frequencies can be interfered with by brick walls, signals from neighborhood devices and Wi-Fi routers, refrigerators, and other home electronics. In some cases, the only way to get complete Wi-Fi coverage is with an extender or Wi-Fi booster.

As the name suggests, these little gadgets connect to the mains power and supercharge weak Wi-Fi signals to carry them farther from your Wi-Fi router.

Matt Hughes offered advice to GB News readers considering using a Wi-Fi booster to eliminate internet blackspots in their home. He told us: “Wi-Fi boosters and extenders, such as the EE Smart Wi-Fi Plus, are a great solution for amplifying your Wi-Fi signal. They are It is best placed in areas around your home where the existing signal is weak. That means more devices can stream, game, and download at the same time.

“Keep in mind that it will not be as effective if installed in a location where the existing signal is already good. Tools such as My EE App can help you find a suitable location.

“It’s worth remembering that Wi-Fi boosters and extenders may sacrifice network speed to ensure coverage. To avoid this trade-off, consumers can use mesh Wi-Fi Look for compatible smart Wi-Fi routers and boosters to build your network and boost download speeds throughout your home, even in the most unwieldy Wi-Fi blackspots.”

As mentioned above, Wi-Fi routers can emit two different frequencies to connect you to the wireless internet, but there’s a clear winner in Matt Hugh’s mind. “5Ghz provides the highest Wi-Fi speeds within the home,” he says. he told us. “the Best to look online Establish The method for connecting to 5GHz differs depending on the Wi-Fi router. However, with the EE smart router, the router automatically does the job on behalf of the customer to ensure that the appropriate devices are on his 5Ghz spectrum. ”

When it comes to building multiple wireless networks in your home, Matt Hughes believes this is “often a good idea.” From the same Wi-Fi router, you can create several different Wi-Fi networks, each with its own network name and password.

EE’s Matt Hughes said: “Many modern smart home devices can be controlled by anyone on the same Wi-Fi network, so it’s often a good idea to have a separate network for guests. Using a separate guest network You can share access more securely and keep your private home network secure.”

And when asked whether broadband networks are likely to suffer most during the winter months when more people are indoors, the Broadband EE director is bullish.

“Fixed broadband networks, particularly full fiber, have been shown to be resilient,” he reassured GB News readers. “Internet traffic increases as the nights draw in and we spend more time at home in the warmth, but again, our networks are resilient enough to scale.”We have the capacity to handle this additional demand. . ”

EE relies on Openreach infrastructure, which connects around 99% of homes and businesses across the UK. Like EE, Openreach is also owned by his BT. The company has pledged £15bn to connect 26 million homes to full-fibre broadband by December 2026.
