While many try to separate politics from sports, Warriors coach Steve Kerr has never shied away from commenting on social issues. The four-time NBA champion with the Warriors has always taken the time to voice his opinions, this time in the spotlight at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Steve Kerr not only made jokes mocking Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, but also set the internet ablaze by performing Stephen Curry’s iconic “Nite Night” celebration.
“When the results are tallied that night, in the words of the great Stephen Curry, we can say goodnight to Donald Trump,” Kerr said to thunderous applause from the crowd.
An iconic Warriors celebration

But before Stephen Curry’s “Nite Night” celebration, Steve Kerr criticized coaches on social media, from the Warriors to the 2024 Olympic gold medal-winning U.S. team, who continue to complain about his coaching.
“We probably would have pressed the cornerbacks more and dropped the safety to Tampa’s 2, but that’s just my opinion. Sorry, but I just wanted you to know how I feel every day of the NBA season,” Kerr said.
Still, the highlight of Kerr’s speech was his imitation of Stephen Curry’s “Nite Knight” game-winning shot. Recently, Curry made four consecutive 3-pointers to win the gold medal against France at the Paris Games. Only a shooter like him would have had the guts to take a heat check through the outstretched arms of Nicolas Batum and Evan Fournier and then actually make the shot and win the gold medal.
Similarly, Carr’s own “good night” to Donald Trump garnered a lot of attention on social media.
The account “Wu Tang is for the Children” posted “Steve Kerr boldly drops the mic,” while another poster, BW Carlin, wrote, “Steve Kerr hits Trump with a Steph Knight Knight cell. This might really be the end.”

Another commenter named Jason Schwartz also mocked coach Steve Kerr for benching Jayson Tatum during the Olympics.
“Steve Kerr, in his Democratic National Convention speech, spoke about the Dream Team players coming together to win a gold medal: ‘Imagine what we could do if 330 million Americans all played on the same team.’ He made no mention of whether Jayson Tatum could join in along with the other 329,999,999 Americans,” Schwartz said.
Steve Kerr returns to Chicago
Of course, Kerr is used to high-pressure situations in Chicago. The nine-time NBA champion scored a comeback shot in the fourth quarter of Game 6 to lead the Bulls to their fifth championship in the 1997 NBA Finals. More than two decades later, the opportunity may be different for the Warriors’ coach, but the stakes couldn’t be higher.
