The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has granted three operating licences to Telecom Networks Malawi (TNM) following a successful renewal process. The licences were awarded at a ceremony in Blantyre, where TNM CEO Michelle Herbert highlighted the company’s history as the first in Malawi to roll out 2G, 3G, 4G and now 5G in its 29th anniversary year.
MACRA Executive Director Daud Suleman commended TNM for its innovation efforts and noted its leading role in the adoption of 5G technology in the country. He stressed the importance of 5G in achieving a connected Malawi, in line with MACRA’s mission to provide internet access to all its citizens.
MACRA Board Chairperson Bridget Chibwana commended TNM for its support to Malawi’s digital transformation plans and highlighted the importance of the three newly issued licences – Application Services, Network Facilities and Network Services. TNM’s continued partnership with MACRA is considered crucial in driving digital inclusion across the country.
TNM Chairman of the Board, Ted Sauti Phiri, expressed the company’s determination to make a lasting impact over the next decade, with a focus on connecting all Malawians and driving digitalisation through the roll-out of 5G. This contract renewal marks a major step forward and reinforces TNM’s role as a major player in Malawi’s telecommunications industry.
