A Facebook video that has been viewed more than 500,000 times claims that people are exposed to more radiation standing near a 5G tower than being inside a microwave oven.

The video (archived here) was first published in 2019 and has made a comeback in recent weeks with tens of thousands of views.
A new study claims to reveal that 5G networks are “worse than living in a microwave”.
The 24-minute video does not include any research, but instead consists of a man holding up a TriField EMF reader outside a working microwave, revealing what appears to be 5G equipment.
He first took measurements outside the microwave, then walked to the window and pointed the device at the supposed 5G facility.
The narrator says: “BREAKING: These 5G “towers of death” are going to be worse than living in a microwave… He’s been given medication and the scale is going haywire. It’s way beyond the microwave and he hasn’t even gone outside” (video mark 33 seconds).
Dr Ken Karipidis from the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) said there would be a big difference between electromagnetic energy (EME) levels from 5G towers and from inside microwave ovens.
“‘Inside the cavity of a microwave oven, EME is extremely powerful to heat and cook food, thousands of times exceeding human safety limits,'” Karipidis said in an email.
“It is important to note that this powerful EME is contained within the microwave cavity and does not pose any danger to anyone standing next to the microwave.
“The EME that people experience from 5G is very low and far below the safe limits for humans. This was recently demonstrated in a study of EME levels near 5G mobile base stations.”
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) study measured EME levels next to 129 5G base stations in New South Wales.
Average levels from the site were less than 1.2% of the safe limit.
In comparison, Dr. Karipidis said studies have shown that levels in microwave ovens are about 150,000 times the safe limit.
5G and health expert Dr. Andrew Wood said the claim was “utter nonsense” and questioned whether the reader used in the video could check the frequencies used in 5G. presented.
Associate Professor Philip Branch from Swinburne University of Technology also questioned the equipment used in the video, pointing out that the readings were taken outside the oven rather than inside as claimed.
He also questioned whether the device would be able to pick up readings from 5G facilities, which are shown quite far away in the video.
Dr. Karipidis further added, “As assessed by ARPANSA and other health authorities, including the World Health Organization, current evidence shows that there is no illness or harm from 5G EME exposure below safe limits.” Outlined in a review of 5G and health research conducted by ARPANSA. ”
