When you think back to Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher’s ’90s superhero drama that aired for four seasons on ABC, it’s no surprise that an infamous image of Hatcher comes to mind: Her sleek black hair cascading down to her shoulders, her iconic “S” cape hanging low over her shoulders, and her bare chest appearing to be wearing nothing underneath. This photo is undeniably hot. GuardianRecalling how the image came about, the actress said:
I broke the Internet back when we still had dial-up connections. I don’t think I’m that great. I remember the photo shoot to promote a TV show. It took all day. Lois is a reporter for the Daily Planet, so I was wearing a white blouse and a pencil skirt, and a cape wrapped around me. Finally on the last take of the day, someone said, “Can I wear the cape without the blouse?” I thought, “What does that mean? Why is Lois Lane naked under the cape?” We just did it as a joke, but the result was moving. I’m very old now, but I’m still proud of it.
That’s how it works, right? She took photos the same way all day, and then just for fun, right before the shoot was over, she tried something different. And lo and behold, that photo not only became one of the most famous photos from the series, but also reportedly one of the most downloaded photos on the internet.
Teri Hatcher says she’s proud of the photo now, and rightly so. But it’s interesting to look back and see the doubts she had at the time. Of course, she knew exactly what the iconic image would imply, and what reason fans would have for seeing Lois Lane naked under Superman’s cape.
