Telefonica and Nokia have signed a strategic agreement to accelerate the development and deployment of private 5G networks in the Spanish business environment.
The agreement, which will run for the next three years, aims to give Spanish companies access to up to 100 Nokia services related to cloud digitalization (Nokia Digital Automation Cloud), private mobile networks (Modular Private Wireless), industrial edge computing (MX Industrial Edge) and industrial devices.
The global communications technology company and telco said their proposals are particularly targeted at the industrial and logistics sectors as the sectors require hyper-connectivity and analysis of thousands of data generated daily, which is crucial for real-time decision-making.
The services included in the agreement will be supported by Telefónica Spain’s network, the company added, adding that through Telefónica Tech, it will also provide its experience and resources as a national telecommunications operator, as well as consulting and maintenance, and big data and IoT connectivity capabilities, leveraging the company’s capabilities as a technology integrator and its previous experience of accompanying companies in their digitalization process.
Telefonica said the technologies involved in the partnership will enable greater interconnectivity between smart devices, facilitating the real-time collection, monitoring and analysis of key business data, making manufacturing processes more efficient and sustainable.
The company added that the private network, which relies on 5G capabilities, will enable it to guarantee quality of service over mobile networks by prioritizing communications, which it said will allow it to offer certain features to customers, such as low-latency communications.
According to the company, as a result of such private networks, many processes will be automated, optimizing the company’s resources and helping to reduce costs while improving the quality of products and services.
Garcia Nevado, Corporate Director at Telefonica Spain, said: “This collaboration with Nokia is in line with our vision to empower the industry with cutting-edge technology in a new era led by artificial intelligence and the use of data. Ahead of this strategy, we have more than 90 use cases to explore 5G capabilities with real customers.”
Rolf Albrecht, head of Nokia’s Enterprise Campus Edge business in Europe, added: “This exciting collaboration with Telefónica will enable enterprises to continue paving the way to digitalisation. Our private wireless and edge on-premise computing solutions are designed to meet the mission-critical needs of asset-intensive industries and also deliver benefits beyond connectivity, such as improved worker safety and reduced emissions, according to the latest Industrial Digitalisation 2024 report.”
