today released data from a retrospective analysis showing an association between the Titan SGS stapler and improved outcomes.
Teleflex, headquartered in Wayne, Pennsylvania, said the data demonstrated improved clinical outcomes and significant increases in surgical efficiency. The analysis compared the Titan SGS stapler to the MultiFire surgical stapler in patients undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG).
Five surgeons at CoreWell Health in Grand Rapids, Michigan, conducted the study and published their findings in the journal Obesity Surgery.
The Titan SGS is the first and only single-action surgical stapler designed and indicated for creating pouches for sleeve gastrectomy and is the only surgical stapler FDA-cleared for this specific indication, according to a news release. Teleflex acquired the stapler through its 2022 acquisition of Standard Bariatrics.
An anatomical approach to surgical stapling allows surgeons to achieve more consistent and symmetrical anatomy with the Titan SGS. With a 23 cm continuous staple line, surgeons can plan and place staples in a single drive. This stapler eliminates the risk of staple line overlap, a known risk factor for leaks.
Teleflex reported outcomes for 807 patients who underwent LSG using the second-generation SGS stapler, which the company compared to 3,829 patients who underwent LSG using a multifire stapler.
The company reported that the average surgical time with the Titan was eight minutes shorter than with the MultiFire stapler, and they also found that a higher percentage of patients were discharged within 24 hours after surgery with the Titan SGS (89.6%) compared to the MultiFire (65%).
At 30 days, Titan SGS reduced readmissions, especially those related to nausea and vomiting (1.7% vs. 4.5%). Teleflex also reported a trend toward fewer reoperations and leaks by 30 days. Investigators also saw similar rates of postoperative bleeding. The study found no leaks, strictures, or postoperative interventions in the Titan SGS cohort.
The researchers note that weight loss at 6 months was slightly but significantly greater in the MultiFire group. However, preliminary review of the 1-year data indicated that this difference would be smaller, the researchers say. “The simplified and efficient stapling process offered by the MultiFire group may have contributed to the improved outcomes,” the authors write. [Titan SGS] This has the potential to improve the safety and efficacy of LSG, ultimately benefiting patients and healthcare providers.”
“Based on real-world evidence from this study and others completed to date, patients and surgeons can have confidence in using this first and only stapler designed specifically for creating sleeve gastrectomy pouches,” said James Ferguson, president and general manager of Teleflex’s Surgical division.
