The proposal was raised at a meeting of the advisory committee between the Ministry of Telecommunications and telecom companies chaired by Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Friday.
“India has already taken various initiatives such as launching the Bhart6G Vision and Bhart6G Alliance, patent and IPR support framework and operationalisation of testbeds, which can help it aim to achieve 10% of the total 6G patents that will further India’s needs and one-sixth contribution to global standards,” the telecom ministry said in a statement on Saturday.
The statement came after the second meeting of the Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC) with Scindia and telecom operators. Incidentally, 6G will pave the way for high-speed broadband networks powered by artificial intelligence, allowing automated infrastructure optimization. Data speeds can reach 100Gbps, which is estimated to be nearly 100 times faster than 5G mobile broadband. 6G also promises to provide better network connectivity than 5G. Discussions at Friday’s meeting focused mainly on issues relating to international standards, India’s share in intellectual property and standard essential patents (SEPs), connectivity gaps and quality of telecom services.
Telecom industry leaders stressed the importance of systematically aligning telecom research with India’s needs and called for a vibrant standards community.
The telco panel said widespread penetration of wired and intelligent wireless broadband networks with reliable connectivity is essential for India to become a leader in deep tech. A statement from the telecom ministry added, “The TSPs also called for a supportive policy framework to encourage investments towards 100% broadband coverage in the country. Various grounds and possible measures to improve the quality of telecom services were also discussed,” the ministry statement added.
