T-Mobile announced this week that its network will be significantly strengthened, primarily in rural areas, thanks to the activation of spectrum it purchased several years ago. For many rural customers utilizing this new spectrum, this will show up as a significant performance improvement on T-Mo’s network.
Back in 2022, T-Mobile spent a huge chunk of change ($304 million) in the FCC’s Auction 108 to acquire over 7,000 county-based licenses to operate in the 2.5GHz spectrum space. This is also called mid-band 5G and is the best of all his 5Gs as it covers a large area and is very fast. This is basically the type of 5G that T-Mobile has used to gain a huge lead in 5G in the US, most of which it acquired in its deal with Sprint.
This is a very large upgrade across the company’s network, so we can’t go into detail about which counties you need to be in. However, T-Mobile is touting the idea that: probably The improvement was because “nearly every county in the United States” was part of the licensing effort. The new coverage is expected to affect about 80 million people. Of course, you need to become a subscriber to actually use it.
T-Mobile says these new licenses can be rolled out almost immediately, so customers could see improved performance within days.
The new spectrum falls under the Ultra Capacity 5G branding, so if the basic 5G logo switches to “5G UC,” you’re using an upgraded network.
If you live in an area that’s about to see an economic upturn, let us know.
